Project Description

Saint Catherine University (St. Kate’s) is partnering with University of Minnesota, Morris (UM, Morris) in this proposal to prepare and test stratospheric ballooning experiments for the total solar eclipse of August 21st 2017. Research emphasis will include measuring eclipse related temperature changes in the stratosphere using a wake boom structure, as well as looking at the Pfotzer maximum changes induced by the eclipse. The funds requested from MNSGC for research will fund stipends for students, primarily during the summer of 2016, along with supplies needed to conduct this research. This program serves NASA’s strategic goals of hands-on space (in our case, near space) research as well as outreach to women students.
