Project Description

Kathleen Spehar, Director of the O'Shaughnessy, received a $20,000 grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. The O'Shaughnessy at St. Catherine University will bring two nationally-known choreographers for a new dance residency program. Choreographers Camille A. Brown and Maureen Fleming will offer school performances, workshops, master classes, lectures, an art exhibit and one public performance for each residency. Both artists will center the content of their residency experience on the themes explored in the regional premieres of their newest works. Camille Brown's "Black Girl" explores themes of black identity young women face in contemporary society, while "Mr. Tol-E-Rance" traces the history of black stereotypes in America. Maureen Fleming's “ B. Madonna", inspired by the myth of Persephone, uses dance to illuminate the struggle between light and darkness and the transformative connection between soul and body. This project is the next phase of Women of Substance residency pilot program, supported by Art Works in 2013.
