Project Description

Paula Rabaey, Assistant Professor of Occupational Therapy was awarded a grant from the Patterson Foundation for $4,000. For children to succeed academically, it is critical that they enter kindergarten with foundational writing skills. Unfortunately, many children, especially those from lower socioeconomic groups, do not have those basic skills. In the proposed project, a team of eight students and one assistant professor in the Master of Arts in Occupational Therapy program at St. Catherine University will volunteer their time with 25 pre-school students, ages four and five, at the Northside Child Development Center in north Minneapolis. The St. Catherine team will implement the Handwriting Without Tears® curriculum to teach the pre-schoolers the writing skills needed for success in kindergarten.
