Project Description
James Wollack, Associate Professor of Chemistry, and Katelyn Caron, student researcher, received a $2,000 award from the 3M Small Scale Grant program to explore two different green chemistry alternatives to the synthesis of avobenzone. The first method utilizes an Aldol condensation reaction and the second utilizes a Claisen reaction. Both methods will be faster than the current industrial synthesis and one method will use a solvent free reaction and the other will incorporate microwave radiation to cut down reaction time.
