Project Description
Director Kathleen Spehar and Deputy Director Ross Willits were award $7,500 by the Marbrook Foundation to support Parable of Sower. Toshi Reagon’s opera was adapted from the post-apocalyptical novel Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler, which blends science fiction with African-American spiritualism, deep insights into gender and race, and climate activism, forming a powerful reflection on the state of our community, society, and humanity. The performance residency is scheduled for April 2019. In addition to the public performance for students, families, and the general public, the pre-residency and residency activities will focus on education and outreach. These events, many of which will involve the entire company of 20 performers, will include an open rehearsal, talkback, workshops and class visits as well as a lecture and other activities for the broader Twin Cities community. Toshi has a long history of community engagement, including founding Word*Spirit* & Sword, a festival exploring women’s experiences, now in its seventh year.
