Project Description

Francine Conley, Associate Professor of English, is awarded a $7,500 by the APDC grant program to support her research during her 2018-2019 sabbatical. During sabbatical, Conley will be researching, writing, traveling, taking photographs, and collecting stories for the purposes of 1) writing a creative essay and 2) developing a one-woman multimedia show called “Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful.” This project is inspired by Mary Wollstonecraft’s last book, Letters written in Sweden, Norway and Denmark (1792). Conley will retrace Mary Wollstonecraft’s journey, during which she will be writing and researching the question of fearless women who wrote despite the odds of their time. The show will be made up of 17-22 monologues/creative sketches, and will be accompanied by a set that includes projections of the photographs taken, plus textual discoveries and video footage composed by Conley.
